First Win Since 2009! Austria Crushes Germany 9–1

The Austrians finally get their reward on their fourth attempt in Ostrava! In Tuesday’s clash between two teams returning to the World Championship, they scored after just 17 seconds and finished the opening period much the same way they had started it, making it 2–0 after the first 15 minutes. After the first intermission, the team coached by Slovak head coach Ďurický added three more goals, and showed no signs of slowing down in the final period, scoring another four times. In total, they beat German goaltender Schurmann nine times. Germany managed only a consolation goal in the final period, at least avoiding a shutout. Austria’s emphatic 9–1 victory was driven largely by its first line, which contributed six goals.

Ján Ďurický (AUT): "After yesterday's tough game, which we lost only in overtime, the boys knew that victory had been within our reach. Today, we carried out our game plan exactly as we had discussed before the match. There were a few minor mistakes, of course, but we were determined to achieve our goal and hear our national anthem after the game – and that's exactly what happened. Overall, I'm very pleased with how the team has performed at this tournament. For example, against India we put in a real fighting performance, and the boys deserve huge credit for that."

Caleb Hayward (GER): "I saw a better effort from our guys, but there was some really bad breaks at the end of multiple periods, that was a bit deflating. For us it's rare to get goals, so we still have to celebrate those rare moments and try to build on them for the next year. We weren't tired today, but we lost some players due to injuries and we were down to three lines."
