Slovakia Suffers First Defeat as Canada Completes Comeback

The first period of the afternoon clash belonged to Slovakia, who created three huge scoring chances. Cooper managed to stop two shots from point-blank range. After one of the goalmouth scrambles, he was already beaten, but Davidson stepped in with a crucial block. The Slovaks finally got their goal in the 13th minute. Lopušan’s goal was also confirmed after a video review. At the midway point of the game, Slovakia wasted a golden 2-on-1 opportunity. Canada punished the missed chance on a 5-on-3 power play, with Josh Anderson converting the two-man advantage to put his team on the scoreboard. In the third period, Perlic and Kayden Rawji swung the momentum Canada's way and put their team in front. The Slovaks were only able to pull one back through Pisarovič, but Canada put the game beyond reach with a pair of empty-netters.

Jason Cormier (CAN): “It was a very close and hard-fought game against a strong Slovak team with a long history and tradition. We expected a defensive battle with limited scoring chances, so we’re pleased to come away with the win. For me, the key moment was the second period. I didn’t think we played particularly well in the first, but after the break we got back to our identity, took control of the game, and started creating more opportunities. What pleased me most was the way the team responded and returned to the style of hockey we want to play. As always, we’ll review the game, take the lessons from it, and then shift our full focus to the next opponent and the next challenge.”
