India Defeats Cayman Islands, Atwal Records Hat Trick

India recorded its third win of the tournament and remains perfect so far. Atwal opened the scoring at 4:28, beating the Cayman Islands netminder for the first goal of the game. However, the response came less than four minutes later, but the Indians managed to regain the lead before the first intermission. At the beginning of the second period, India scored twice to move significantly closer to victory. The Cayman Islands cut the deficit to two goals late in the 23rd minute, but India remained in control. In the final period, the Indians saw out the win comfortably, with Atwal completing his hat trick. Virdee added the final goal to make it 6–2.

Scott Sparks (CAY): “It was a very challenging game for us. India is a very strong team and they showed their quality today. Our players gave everything they had and battled hard until the final whistle, which is definitely something positive we can take into the next game. We also suffered two injuries during the match, which put additional pressure on the rest of the squad. Despite that, the team showed great character and kept fighting. Our goalkeeper was outstanding today and played a fantastic game, keeping us in contention for long periods. I think the key moment came when the score was 4–2 and we had a power play. We failed to capitalize on that opportunity, and shortly afterwards India scored. In my opinion, that sequence had a major impact on the outcome of the game.”

Karny Dhillon (IND): “Today’s game was a bit different because of the early start, and after several days at the tournament the players were feeling some fatigue. Despite that, I think we played a good game, executed our game plan well, and managed some difficult moments, including a few penalties. The key moment was our strong start, when we applied sustained pressure, wore down the opposition and their goalkeeper, and laid the foundation for a good result. Securing our third win is a great feeling, especially after being away from this tournament for nine years. We’re pleased with the result, but our focus now shifts to Great Britain, which will be our toughest test so far.”
