Great Britain opens Ball Hockey World Championship with victory over Cayman Islands

Great Britain got off to a flying start in the opening period, scoring twice within the first two minutes to take a 2–0 lead. They then managed the game well and headed into the locker room with the advantage intact. The second period turned into a high-scoring affair, with both teams finding the net twice. As a result, Great Britain carried a 4–2 lead into the second intermission. The Brits came out strong in the third period and extended their advantage to 6–2. Both teams added another goal later on, but Great Britain held on to secure the victory 7–3.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

Luke Brown (GBR): "I thought we could have played with more intensity throughout the game. At times, we lacked a bit of concentration in our own defensive zone, which allowed the opponent to spend more time in our end than we wanted. Overall, though, I’m very happy with the result and really pleased for the guys. It’s our first win, and now we need to build on it. The main focus for us was to make sure our energy was high from the start, and I think that will be key moving forward. The team is buzzing right now, and we’ll rest up and get back to work tomorrow. The key moments were definitely the two early goals, which helped us take control of the game and spend more time in their zone. As for the refereeing, I thought they did a very good job throughout the match, and I hope that continues for the rest of the tournament."

Scott Sparks (CAY): "We had a few issues in the game today, but they are things we can fix quite easily. We also have a lot of rookies in the team, and they played a decent game, but it’s clear we still have a lot of work to do, which was reflected in the result. We also expected the opponent to be better than in the past, and they were a very fast and well-structured team that played really organized hockey."
