Canada Has Ruled Women’s Ball Hockey… Dominantly!

The Women’s World Ball Hockey Championship is a few years younger than the men’s version. Players first got the chance to compete in 2007 in Ratingen, Germany. Since then, the tournament has been held eight more times, and the clear dominance belongs to Team Canada. Canada reigns not only in ice hockey, the sport it made world-famous and which today counts millions of players around the globe. The cradle of hockey has conquered its close relatives too — including ball hockey. Across nine Women’s World Championships, the maple leaf nation boasts six gold medals, one silver, and two bronze. That says it all: except for 2011, when the Canadians fell short to host Slovakia in the final, they have won every single medal game they’ve played — either gold or bronze. An impressive record indeed.

Medal Overview

Only three gold medals have slipped from Canada’s grasp — and those were fairly split among Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and the United States. The rest of the ball hockey world has yet to make a dent. The overall medal table is shared among just four nations, and no other country has ever reached the podium. Canada leads with 9 medals (6 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). The Czech Republic follows closely — they have also medaled at every championship, holding a full collection of all three types of medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze). Slovakia ranks third with 6 total medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), and the United States currently sits fourth with 3 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze). The Americans will arrive in Ostrava as the defending world champions.

Will Ostrava crown a new women’s team that can knock either Canada or the Czech Republic off the podium? The Czech players have a chance to repeat their heroic run from Pardubice, where they claimed their only world title on home soil. At the last two championships, they finished just shy of gold. In Visp, Switzerland, they fell 3–0 in the final to the U.S. Meanwhile, Canada secured bronze by routing Slovakia 7–1.

Could we see a newcomer among the medalists this year? Will Team USA defend their gold, or will Canada reclaim the throne? Will the world’s best female ball hockey players witness a new attendance record? And will the Czech locker room echo once again with the iconic Pardubice tune “Vysoký jalovec” after the final? There are more questions than answers — and only the World Championship in Ostrava can provide them. Don’t miss it!

Fun Fact

A quick glance at the championship’s history reveals something intriguing: Canada has always won two golds in a row — but never managed to complete a golden hat trick. The first streak was broken by Slovakia, the second by the Czech Republic, and the third by the U.S. in Switzerland. Will Canada now begin another push for a third consecutive title, only to see it interrupted again — or will they finally break this curious pattern?
